A pilot project was launched Thursday morning at the Century Park LRT station.
The Edmonton Public Library has set up a lending machine offering food for thought. The vending machine has 400 spaces filled with paperbacks, DVDs, and video games.
"It's a way to provide access to those who don't have a physical library in their neighbourhood," said Pilar Martinez, executive director of public services, "we're providing service to those who don't have access. Plus the added convenience there are 100,000 riders who use the LRT service."
Mayor Stephen Mandel and Councillor Don Iveson were among those present at the project's launch.
To borrow a book, all you need is a library card. The machine dispenses the item, which can be returned at the station as well.
Student Joe Mooney loves the convenience of the project.
"Especially on the way to school, since I live on the West side and I go to school way over here, it's pretty convenient that I can just pick up stuff on the way to school and just drop it off."
EPL is the first library in Canada to have a complete borrowing and drop-off location outside of a library building.
The cost of the one-year pilot project is $20,000.
