Ryan Smyth reportedly interested in return to Edmonton Oilers

Ryan Smyth is interested in returning to the Edmonton Oilers, according to a report by TSN's Bob McKenzie.

McKenzie wrote Monday that Smyth, currently under contract with the Los Angeles Kings, would like to return to Edmonton, where he was drafted more than 15 years ago.

The 35-year-old left-winger has one year left on his contract with the Kings, one that will see him paid $4.5 milliong next season.

Smyth played for the Oilers for more than a decade, before being shipped to the Islanders at the 2007 trade deadline.

Current Oilers winger Ryan Jones responded to the rumour on Twitter, saying "If Smyth came back I would welcome him with open arms! IF he shaved his head."

Oilers fans that Global News spoke to Monday afternoon were excited by the prospect of Smyth's return. "I think we'd welcome him back with open arms," said Pat Gallagher. "I don't think he ever should have left."

"I think he's a positive influence, he has great work ethic and he's good for the team," said Steve Fitzgerald.
