One person is dead, and an RCMP officer has been shot after an incident in Fort McMurray early Wednesday morning.

RCMP received a call at 3:30 on Wednesday morning about a man with a gun at an apartment building on MacDonald Avenue. Three officers entered the apartment and came face to face with an armed suspect.

The two parties engaged in gunfire, leaving the adult male dead, and a female officer shot in the abdomen.

The RCMP officer was transported to hospital with non-life threatening injuries. The officer who allegedly shot the suspect did not suffer injury.

The Alberta Serious Incident Response Team (ASIRT) is now handling the investigation. ASIRT is called in to investigate any time an Alberta police officer is involved in a case where serious injury or death occurs.

According to ASIRT, numerous shots were fired. The investigation is seeking to determine who fired first.

The officer who has been hospitalized has only been on the job for 10 months.

All of the weapons involved in the incident have been seized by ASIRT.

The identity of the suspect is still unknown.
