NDP leader promises energy renewal centre for Lethbridge

Alberta NDP leader Brian Mason making a campaign stop in Lethbridge to announce plans to bring a provincial renewable energy research centre to the city, if he’s elected.

Mason says, Lethbridge has more sun than almost any other place in Canada and adds it has ample resources in terms of wind energy. He says as a centre of the feed lot industry there is also tremendous potential to do research into biomass projects.

He says the Alberta NDP would create a Renewable Development Fund, accompanied by a research centre in Lethbridge committing $50 million over three years to support activities to make Alberta a leader in energy efficiency and renewable energy generation.

He adds the NDP will also invest the $400 million remaining in the Carbon Capture and Sequestration Fund in projects related to renewable energy throughout the province. Mason says even in a province blessed with as many hydrocarbons as Alberta, in the long run, renewable energy is the future.

With two strong post secondary institutions in Lethbridge, Mason says the centre will attract new students, create jobs and keep graduates in the city.

Mason also got a boost while in Lethbridge from former Mayor Bob Tarleck.

The former Mayor says he never thought he would get involved in this election, but after hearing several campaign promises from Wildrose Leader Danielle Smith he says he felt he had to endorse the New Democrat Party.

Mason says Tarleck’s endorsement recognizes the hard work of NDP candidates and the importance of making Alberta’s prosperity work for everyone.
