Bill 2 a hot topic in the Legislature

It was meant to focus on bullying, more power for school boards and easier access to information for parents.

And now it seems as though Bill 2 will not pass unless the Premier delays an election call.

In the past few weeks the bill has come under fire, prompting massive protests at the legislature.

The bill has seen opposition from the separate school board and homeschoolers.

Education Minister Thomas Lukaszuk says he even received a death threat causing the building to go on lockdown for a period of time Tuesday.

"You have to take those things seriously because you just never know what's going to happen. Neither I nor any of my staff should be subject to any threats in carrying out our duties," says Lukaszuk.

Wednesday evening debate was stopped so he could amend the bill is still confident it will pass.

"I think the bill should pass because it's the best thing that could possibly happen to the children of Alberta, not only for today, but for the next number of years."

Thursday was the last day the bill could be debated and late in the day, Preimer Alison Redford addressed the issue.

"It's important to me that we get this through," Redford says adding, "I'm still very optimistic we're going to be able to get that done."

With speculation the writ will be dropped Monday, some believe the bill has died.

"No one in government has ever suggested that we have no intention of passing this bill, and we're carrying on as required," says Lukaszuk

When Redford was asked if it is possible the election will be delayed in order to get the bill passed, she responded with a few hinting words.

"I really want to get that act passed, I want to get that act passed."

There was a possibility debate would be extended into the evening Thursday however, the government did not receive the unanimous consent it needed in order for that to happen.

Opposition members say it wasn't fair of Lukaszuk to introduce new changes to Bill 2 today and expect it to be passed without fully debating the changes.
