Dean Millard is both a reporter and the weekend anchor for Global Edmonton's sports department. Dean has been part of the Global family since 1999, starting his career in Red Deer, then Regina, and now Edmonton.
It's only fitting he is a huge fan of the City of Champions. “Growing up, I was a huge fan of the Oilers, in particular goaltender Andy Moog and Eskimos' wide receiver Brian Kelly. I remember getting Oilers calendars sent to me from my aunt and uncle who still live here (in Edmonton). But as I got older, I became of a fan of the Winnipeg Jets, seeing as I lived two hours away in Brandon, Manitoba and I still hold out hope a NHL team will return to Winnipeg.”
Dean enjoys playing hockey, golfing, biking, skiing and just about everything else that's athletic as well as camping, travelling and spending time with family.
Dean loves his job. “I don't know if there is a better job available for a sports fan than the one I have. I get to watch sports, meet interesting people and tell fantastic stories.”
His favourite movies change quite often, but a few favourites are Wonderboys, Almost Famous, Fear and Loathing in Las Vegas, and of course, Slapshot.
The person that touched Dean's life the most is his mother, who courageously fought and lost her battle with cancer in 1994.
Earlier this year, Dean and other Edmonton sports personalities faced off in a weight loss challenge called “Belly Off For The Playoffs.” The goal of the competition was to lose as much weight as possible, and to raise money for their favourite charities at the same time. After the 13-week challenge, Dean lost 19 pounds, placing third in the contest, and raised $2,636 for the Cross Cancer Institute.
Right now, Dean and his beautiful wife Trish are enjoying life as newlyweds.
You can catch Dean's sportscasts weekends at 6.00 PM on the newly expanded News Hour, and at 11.00 PM during News Final.
