Homeowners reminded to clear snow off roofs
City crews are busy clearing main routes and residents have been working to keep snow off their walks and around their vehicles, but what about the roof.
Snow has been steadily piling up on roofs over the past week and that can cause problems if it's not removed.
"Not only is it the typical problems that you would have because of having too much snow but now weight is becoming a factor," said Randy Keehn with City Wide Lawn & Snow Ltd."Some roofs have upwards of 4 to 5 feet of snow. That's a lot of weight."
Keehn says its very important for homeowners to clear the snow off of their roofs especially if they don't want to deal with structural damage.
"What will happen is all of a sudden you'll start developing cracks inside your house," he said. "It's better to get the weight off the roof before the cracks develop then have to shovel the snow and then fix the cracks."
An indicator that a roof is holding too much snow is if you can see icicles and other ice buildup.
Ice buildup can lead to water coming into the home, popping off skylights and windows and "all kinds of problems."
"Just because you don't see the water coming into the house, it could be coming down the wall, inside or outside the wall," Keehn said.
