RCMP have now reopened Highway 16 after closing it on Wednesday morning due to icy conditions that forced multiple vehicles into the ditch. RCMP says conditions are still poor and are not recommended.

In the city, Edmonton police reported that they responded to 67 collisions between 6:30 am and 3:00 pm. No serious injuries have been reported, but police say they are receiving about twice as many calls as they would on a typical winter day according to EPS spokesperson Chad Orydzuk.

Areas north of Edmonton east to Cold Lake and west to Peace River to are still under a snowfall warning with accumulations of up to 10 to 15 centimetres of snow expected in several areas by Wednesday.

Police are encouraging drivers to stay home if possible, and the following winter driving tips for those who must venture out onto the roads:

  • - Check weather conditions. With the heavy snowfall we are receiving, it is best to avoid going out or driving if you don't have to. Expect delays.
  • - Drive for the road conditions. Drive slow.
  • - Give yourself plenty of room to stop, don't tailgate, and give the driver behind you plenty of room to stop.
  • - Watch as you approach intersections. Watch for other drivers and pedestrians.
  • - Keep all of your vehicle windows clear of snow. Keep your headlights and tail lights clear and clean as well.
  • - Ensure your vehicle is well maintained and ready for winter driving.
