Effective immediately, Strathcona County has issued a full fire ban due to dry and windy conditions in the region. The ban covers Sherwood Park as well as all hamlets and rural areas within the county.

The ban means that outdoor fires are not allowed in the county until further notice. This includes fire pits, charcoal barbeques, fireworks or burning barrels. Fire permits will not be issued until the ban has been lifted.

Residents are still allowes to use propane barbeques.

Failure to comply with the terms of the ban could result in a fine, as well as charges relating to the costs of fighting any resulting fires.

Crews responded to a large fire in the area of TWP 560 and RR 212, in the north end of the County at approximately 10:00 on Wednesday, May 11th.

It is believed that 100 acres of land were impacted by the fire, which was brought under control by 5:00am on Thursday.

Firefighters will continue to fight the blaze throughout the day on Thursday.
