Letter carriers are on stand-by for a possible strike.

The Canadian Union of Postal Workers could give canada post a 72-hour strike notice as early as this weekend.

Both sides are at the bargaining table. They are discussing the counter-proposal the crown corporation made yesterday, to the union's latest contract offer, but union leaders are not optimistic a deal will be done.

"We shouldn't have to strike to make them take us seriously but at this time it's almost getting to the point where that seems to be the only option that's going to be open to us." said Bev Ray of the CUPW Local.

Canada Post wants to cut the starting wage for letter carriers, but the postal workers union says that's unacceptable.

The union wants better safety measures for employees and more carriers on city streets.
