A shocking case of vandalism in the community of Calmar has left a decades old church in disrepair.
Members of the Holy Trinity Ukrainian Catholic Church arrived on Saturday to prepare for Palm Sunday service, only to discover pages ripped from Holy books, crucifixes bent, and communion bread strewn on the floor.
"There's so many emotions that go through you." Congregation member Barb Iwanicka said. "You're angry at first. You're disappointed, dismayed, you're carrying all these emotions, and you're going, 'How could this happen?'"
Some of the items destroyed have been in the church since it was built 63 years ago, including a chandalier and a candle holder.
"It's a small congregation and it's going to be hard to put back together." Iwanicka said.
The church does have insurance, and they have to wait until an adjuster comes by before cleaning up the damage.
Congregation members are concerned that the church won't be functional for Easter service on Sunday.
"There's just no reason behind somebody doing this." said Morley Senio, another member of the church. "This is a place of worship, and all it is, we're seeing is hatred."
The cost of the damage has not been tallied as of yet.
