CALGARY – An advancement in “beer technology” means more cow-folks will get their hands on a cool brew faster at this year’s Calgary Stampede.
It’s called Bottom’s Up! And it’s the newest way the Stampede is pouring its draft at the grandstand – literally, from the bottom of the glass.
The key is a magnet at the bottom of the cup that allows the beer to flow in while keeping it inside the cup.
“The nozzle will make the magnet move and the draft will come up into the cup filling the cup from bottom to top with the perfect head of beer on the draft and it’s really fast” says Duane Horpinuk.
“People are loving it!”
The cups cost approximately double a regular cup due to the magnets but Stampede officials say they make up for the added expense with faster service and less waste.
The machine can fill a cup in just a few seconds equalling about 44 cups in one minute.
However, drinkers beware – if you move the magnet – you’re suds will spill.
“We say if you touch it, you’re wet. If you feel the magnet on the bottom of the cup and you move that magnet, well, gravity will take over and the beer will come out the bottom,” says Horpinuk.
The Stampede is the first to use the new pouring system.
Brew from the Bottom Up is selling at three bars on the tarmac outside of the grandstand.
