Premier Ed Stelmach announced on Monday, that new schools are coming for Beaumont, Airdrie and Fort McMurray, as well as funding to revitalize existing schools in the province.

In total, 22 new schools will be built across the province and 13 existing schools will receive funding to modernize heating, plumbing and electrical systems, and update science and career trades classrooms.

In Fort McMurray, two kindergarten to grade six schools will be constructed, one public and one Catholic.

The updates will help address the province's growing population. By 2020, the province expects that there will be 700,000 in Alberta, compared to the 600,000 in the province currently.

“This is part of a government investment to address growing student enrolments in some of the fastest growing communities in Alberta and responds to concerns we've been hearing for some time,” said Stelmach. “Our students are the future leaders of our province and deserve positive learning environments.”

The total cost for the project is estimated at $550 million, and will be paid for by public-private partnerships.
