Airport group claims to have enough signatures to force plebiscite
Envision Edmonton, the group fighting to keep the City Centre Airport open, says it has reached it's goal.
It believes it has collected close to 80,000, slightly more than what is needed to force a plebiscite on the airport issue. This is Envision Edmonton's final weekend to collect the signatures. Volunteers are now making sure all the eyes are dotted and tee's are crossed before time is up on Wednesday.
"We're doing a self-audit ourselves to ensure we don't have duplicates and that we have correct addresses." Mary Anne Stanway of Envision Edmonton said. "It's very daunting to ensure all that but we want to make sure what we take to the city is as accurate as possible so we're positive that this will go forward."
The group is still hoping to collect another five to ten thousand signatures in case some of the names are rejected by the city.
