The Alberta Serious Incident Response Team is investigating after man was shot by police on the Alexander first nations reserve Tuesday night.

Members of the Morinville RCMP detachment were responding to a family dispute at a home on the reserve northwest of Edmonton, said Clifton Purvis, spokesperson for ASIRT. The call was elevated to a weapons complaint and shortly thereafter the 26-year-old male was shot. The man was taken to hospital and is expected to recover from his wounds, Purvis said.

Sgt. Tim Taniguchi, spokesperson for RCMP K Division, said the RCMP fully supports the ASIRT investigation and will co-operate. He said the member involved in the shooting remains on active duty and has been offered support from the member and employee assistance program.

“Obviously it can be very traumatic for police officer when they deal with incidents like this,” Taniguchi said.
