Here’s some of the information you need to know heading into the coming Alberta provincial election:
Which riding am I in?
Since the last provincial election in 2008, the number of ridings in Alberta has increased from 83 to 87. That means you may be in a different constituency now, even if you haven’t moved. To find out which riding you live in, use the Elections Alberta search page. Current maps are available here.
When is the election?
The writ dropped on March 26 for a vote on April 23. Advance polls will be open on April 19, 20 and 21.
Who is running in this election?
There are nine registered political parties in Alberta, and a candidate who is not affiliated with one of those parties may run as an independent. The official list of candidates will be finalized on the 14th day after the writ is dropped. Political blogger Dave Cournoyer has compiled a list of nominated candidates, along with links to their websites and social media pages.
When can I hear the candidates?
Throughout the election campaign, a number of all-candidates forums will be held around the province. We will be compiling a list of them and posting them on the Decision Alberta page. If you are organizing a forum, please send the details to [email protected].
Am I eligible to vote?
Yes, if you are a Canadian citizen at least 18 years of age, and have lived in Alberta for six months before election day. To check if you are registered, click here. To add your name or update your information on the voters’ list, go to www.voterlink.ab.ca. You’ll need your Alberta driver’s licence or ID card to complete the online forms. You can also call Elections Alberta at (780) 427-7191 in Edmonton. If you’re outside of Edmonton, dial 310-0000 then (780) 427-7191. You can also email [email protected].
Can I still vote if I’m not registered?
Yes, but you’ll have to sign a declaration at the polling station and show a piece of government-issued picture ID, or two documents showing your name and address.
Where can I find more information?
Elections Alberta has tons of information on its website, and it will be updated as the campaign continues. You can also follow Elections Alberta on Twitter at @ElectionsAB.
