It may seem like a harmless transgression, but stepping off the curb without a cross-walk could cost you your life.
The Edmonton Police Service has launched a new pilot program designed to get people to think twice before they jaywalk. The initiative features provocative artwork that will be displayed on sidewalks at three locations identified as having a high number of jaywalking incidents. Among the locations is 64 Avenue between 176 and 177 Streets.
"What we're hoping is that when people view the art and see the message is that they'll think twice before taking the shortcut across the street and they will use the appropriate marked crossing walk," said Const. Jerrid Maze of Southwest Division. "Jaywalking is not just illegal, but it is risky behaviour that could get you injured or killed."
So far this year three people have died in our city while jaywalking and two other people were seriously injured. Police have charged 734 pedestrians with jaywalking this year. All offenders face a fine of up to $250.
