Alberta Liberals announce fast-track rules for candidates in case of fall vote

EDMONTON - Alberta's Opposition Liberals announced Thursday they are fast-tracking their candidate nominations in case of a snap fall election.

Party leader Raj Sherman announced the current nomination process will be compressed from two months to two weeks.

"We intend to get battle ready," said Sherman.

"If it's a fall election, we'll be as ready as we can possibly be," though it's not ideal, he said.

"If it's a spring election, we'll have doorknocked for five or six months. We'll be prepared."

He says voting will be open to non-paying party supporters - just like in the recent leadership contest that saw Sherman win the top job.

The party has 16 candidates nominated, but Sherman says the goal is to fill spots in all 87 ridings.

The party will be announcing new nominees in the coming weeks.

Alberta's governing Progressive Conservatives will pick a new leader this weekend, raising the possibility that a fall election will follow.
