The Edmonton Humane Society has seen many animals who have been badly injured. But recently, they took in one especially motherly, injured dog.
Stephanie McDonald, the Edmonton Humane Society's executive director, recently blogged about a dog that had been found by a small, independent rescue in Red Deer called "For the Love of Dogs."
McDonald described the dog as "broken," after being hit by a car. The dog was brought to Edmonton on December 5, suffering a severe fracture of the femur. She was nursing five, healthy puppies, and a kitten.
The dog, who has now been named Esperanza (Spanish for 'hope') had taken the kitten in as her own. Esperanza has been named the Humane Society's "Mother of the Year."
Esperanza is now recovering from a surgery to fix her leg. The kitten, Jacob, will be reunited to his family once he learns to eat kitten food.
You can learn more about Esperanza's story, and other animals in need on the Edmonton Humane Society's website.
