Graphic video shown in court
The graphic beating of an Edmonton ETS driver was shown in provincial court on Monday when Crown prosecutors showed video captured by the security camera on the bus where the attack occurred.
The video shows Gary Edwin Mattson boarding the bus driven by Tom Bregg on Dec. 3, 2009 near 139th Avenue and Victoria Trail.
Mattson appears to be arguing with Bregg making aggressive gestures towards the driver.
Eventually Bregg opens the door for Mattson to leave, Mattson then gets into the face of Bregg and punches him three times in the head, quickly throwing Breggs seemingly unconscious body down the steps of the bus and onto the sidewalk.
Mattson then stands over Bregg and quickly stomps his head 14 times while Bregg lay on the pavement.
At one point Mattson appears to be finished but then stands over Bregg's body and stomps him one last time before taking off.
Passengers are then seen coming to check on the injured driver.
Bregg spent 15 days in intensive care, had to have multiple surgeries, a spent time in rehabilitation at the Glenrose Hospital before being able to return to his St. Albert home.
Mattson pleaded guilty earlier in May to aggravated assault for the attack and to assaulting a police officer for spitting at an officer after he was arrested.
The sentencing hearing continues May 25.
