The race to become the new mayor of Calgary is a tight one with a supper-time news anchor and a veteran alderman in a virtual dead heat.

With 34 of 241 polls reporting, former CTV anchor Barb Higgins and Ric McIver, known as "Dr. No" for his tightfisted fiscal practices, both have 38 per cent of the vote.

Naheed Nenshi, a 38-year-old business professor who was the master of social networking, is a distant third.

In Edmonton, early indications are re-election for incumbent Mayor Stephen Mandel, who has nearly double the votes of David Dorward.

Voter turnouts in both cities were heavier than last election.
