Calgary Police lay charges in city’s first homicide of 2011
CALGARY – Police have charged a man in connection to Calgary’s first murder of the year.
Just after 1:00a.m. on New Year’s Day, Melake Selam Worku was shot at the intersection of 3rd Avenue and 3rd Street southwest. He was taken to hospital but died of his injuries.
The area was crowded with New Year's revellers when the shooting started, and an innocent man was struck and wounded by an errant bullet while getting into a vehicle near 4th Street and 3rd Avenue S.W.
Police have since charged a man in connection with the bystander's shooting; Godwin Mawutor Bonney, 22, of Toronto, Ont. was charged with attempted murder.
On Thursday, May 12th, RCMP in Fort McMurray arrested 26-year-old Ahmed Mohamed of Brooks, Alberta on unrelated drug and weapons charges.
Mohamed was a suspect in Worku’s murder so Calgary Police were notified.
After speaking with Mohamed, police have now charged him with second-degree murder in connection to Worku’s death.
Mohamed has been brought back to Calgary and awaits his first court appearance on Tuesday.
